I was 12 when I first got my hands on a copy of The Chamber of Secrets and from that moment I embarked on a magical journey full of important life lessons Harry Potter taught me, from love and loss to facing your fears.
I remember it like it was yesterday, I was on vacation with my parents at Walt Disney World (because of course I was) where I first saw a Harry Potter book. I have always had a fear of heights so while my brother and father rode the Tower of Terror at Hollywood Studios, I browsed the gift shop with my mom.
Being a total book nerd I gravitated towards this display that had books on the bottom shelf, lo and behold there they were, two of the best books I would ever read in my life. It was Harry Potter Year 1 and 2. I guess I was late to the Harry Potter game because Chamber of Secrets had already come out and I had no prior knowledge to the series. I read both back covers and decided to get Chamber of Secrets thinking it would be a better story (I was oblivious to the fact that it was a series).
I spent the entire day at the parks reading this book, devouring it. I was hooked and was transported into this magical world while taking a vacation inside another magical world. I had never identified so much with a character that I read it in a day and begged my mom to go back to the Tower of Terror gift shop to purchase Sorcerer’s Stone (by then I realized I had messed up and read book two first).
A love affair was born and although I do not consider myself a Potterhead, I still read the books every year and can proudly say I’m a Gryffindor. Here are the top 8 important lessons that Harry Potter taught me over the years.
#1 Anything is Possible if You Believe it
No matter where you are in life, what you are doing and what your dreams are, you can achieve it. Throughout the books there are so many trials and hardships in the road but hope is always there. Where there’s a will there’s a way and it is proven time and time again, from taking a leap onto a flying dragon, running away from hungry spiders or dealing with your ridiculously funny and ingenious twin brothers, if you can believe it, you can achieve it.
“The thing about growing up with Fred and George, is that you sort of start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.” – Ginny Weasley, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
#2 It’s Okay to Ask For Help
Like Harry, sometimes it feels like you don’t want to ask for help. His was a fear of putting loved ones in danger, to me it’s about being self sufficient and not needing anyone else. The iconic trio of Harry, Ron and Hermione come to rely on each other to fight the biggest battles, they play off each others strengths and that makes them more powerful. I learned in time to ask for help, to let other people in and that made me a stronger person and my business all the better for it. So when you need it, ask for help, or there is always the library ????
“When in doubt, go to the library.”- Ron Weasley, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
#3 Our Choices Are Stronger Than Our Abilities
We all have a choice. We have a choice to believe that we have what it takes to be successful, to be loved, to have it all. It is our choices, the ones we consciously make every day that show us who we truly are. You can be the most talented and have strong abilities but that in itself does not define who you are. Our choices help us find out what we’re really made of.
“It’s our choices Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” -Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
#4 Face Your Fears
However scary it may seem, sometimes we have to face our fears to get what we want. If we do not face our fears we are stuck in the same reality. If you want your business to grow but are scared of putting yourself out there and being judged then ain’t nothin’ gonna happen. Ron had a fear of spiders, but he decided to follow them in order to find the cure for Hermione. Harry had to deal with his terror of Dementors to save himself and his godfather. Facing your fears open the door to your dream reality. So keep fighting those fears and keep going forward.
“We’re all going to keep fighting, Harry. You know that?” – Neville Longbottom, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
#5 Love Does Conquer All
Love is a strong theme throughout the books and it is the strongest power there is. Love has a way of conquering our deepest fears and guiding us through life. Lily’s love for Harry protects him from evil and Snape’s love for Lily shapes his path after her death.
“Always” – Severus Snape, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
#6 Don’t Let The Muggles Get You Down
I think this one is by far my favorite. We live in a society of competition and envy, of stepping over the little guy, but we must not live in fear of being judged. Often people will try to dull your sparkle or comment on your choices and you must not let it get to you, ever. Walk your own path, you know yourself more than anyone and be true to what you believe in.
“Don’t let the Muggles get you down.” – Ron Weasley, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
#7 You Can be Brave, Even When You Don’t Think You Can Be
One of the biggest lessons Harry Potter taught me is to be brave. Brave enough to pursue my dreams, brave enough to ignore the doubts, brave enough to push forward. Neville Longbottom does not strike you as the most brave soul, yet he is in Gryffindor for a reason, when he truly believes in something he fights for it and is all the braver for doing it. Not to mention the badass he becomes when wielding the Gryffindor sword.
“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” -Albus Dumbledore Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
#8 Happiness is Within You, Always
Each of us has the power to make the world a little brighter, regardless of our circumstances. When things get tough all you have to do is look within you to find your power. Throughout the course of the series, Harry Potter faces a lot of troubling challenges and despite all the evil and darkness he fights, he never looses that light of hope.
“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” – Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter is one of the best book series I have ever read and I know I am not the only one that feels this way. It transports you to a world of magic and friendship of great evil and pure goodness. There are so many lessons Harry Potter taught me, but I think the one that has always stayed with me is to not let my fears keep me from living the life I want.
Since I just finished watching yet another Harry Potter marathon on Freeform (RIP ABC Family), I illustrated the Felix Felicis vial to make a wallpaper. You know, for when you need a little bit of luck.
I hope you like the freebie wallpaper! What is the biggest lesson Harry Potter taught you? Let me know in the comments ????⚡
